In addition, muscle-strengthening exercises are associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), all-cause mortality, and diabetes.
Muscle-strengthening exercises can be performed with a variety of equipment, including weights, weight machines, and body-weight exercises. These activities may be done at home, at a gym, or in a physical therapy clinic. It is recommended that these exercises be done at least two days a week and that they be done in two or three sets.
While current research supports muscle-strengthening activities for their cardioprotective benefits, more studies are needed to understand their effects on other major NCDs. In particular, studies are needed to investigate the dose-response relationship. The benefits of these activities appear to plateau at a level of at least one hour a week.
A recent narrative literature review summarized evidence from large prospective cohort studies that include long-term follow-up. Several studies demonstrated that muscle-strengthening activities are linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular mortality, all-cause mortality, cancer mortality, and diabetes. However, some of the findings were inconsistent.
More evidence is needed on the relationship between the frequency of muscle-strengthening activities and the risk of CVD, all-cause mortality, and diabetes. Future research should examine the influence of social, intrapersonal, and environmental factors, as well as other health-related factors, on the engagement of muscle-strengthening exercises. Research is also necessary to determine the optimal combination of muscle-strengthening and aerobic exercise.
Lastly, future studies should explore the role of wearable technologies and other factors in increasing engagement in muscle-strengthening exercise. If done properly, such technology may enhance the effectiveness of these exercise programs.
Currently, the majority of research on muscle-strengthening activities is based on the population. This results in a limited number of studies on its effect on major NCDs. Nevertheless, data suggest that these activities have a protective impact on all-cause mortality.
Although more research is needed to fully understand the benefit of these activities, the evidence is growing. The results of this review should encourage more people to engage in these activities.
Flexibility and mobility exercises
